Chicago Radio Host Cuts Vacation Short, Learns Lesson from House Fire
LIFEcard Secure Services Helps Members Plan for the Unexpected

When Chicago’s WGN radio host Spike O’Dell set off on an Alaskan cruise vacation with his family just weeks ago the furthest thought from his mind was losing his home and personal possessions. That is exactly what happened when his family’s three-story home went up in flames in Chicago’s western suburbs.

Firefighters were dispatched to the blaze and neighbors at the scene described the tragedy as devastating. “Words can’t describe this … it puts life in perspective. In the blink of an eye, it’s gone,” one neighbor reported.

Shortly after being notified about his home being burnt down, Spike O’Dell told CBS News in Chicago of the lessons learned from the fire. In the news report, he revealed the importance of keeping detailed records of everything in your home. It is your material possessions destroyed in a fire that cannot be replaced. By keeping a record of what is in your home, you can prepare for the unexpected such as a fire. It could certainly save your life, the report indicated.

One of the best ways to keep a detailed record of your personal vital information that is prone to fire, theft, loss or damage is with LIFEcard Secure – a service that gives members a “safe place” to store personal information online like credit card and telephone numbers, passwords or even a detailed inventory of a home for insurance purposes. Should a fire or other tragedy occur, members can log on to the LIFEcard Secure website from any location and instantly retrieve their stored data.

Tips for Traveling Safely

When traveling either on vacation or on business, it is important to plan adequately for your trip to prevent any problems from arising. Traveling, especially abroad and during these post- 9/11 times, can be stressful and can dampen your trip if proper precautions are not taken. Here are a few tips to help make your trip safe and enjoyable.

Do Research Before Leaving on Trip
When planning your itinerary and before making your reservations, find out what the political and cultural climate is at your destination. This is especially important when traveling abroad. Choose travel providers that offer services that best accommodate your needs opposed to providers with the cheapest rates.

Before leaving on your trip, you should obtain all the necessary paperwork such as passport, visa, flight and ticket information, itineraries and other travel materials that you will need for your trip. Be sure to read all the fine print. This is for your protection. Call or e-mail your family and/or friends to let them know when and where you are traveling and give them a copy of your itinerary.

Get Travel Insurance In Case of an Emergency
Surprisingly, many travelers do not seek insurance. Travel insurance can be an asset in situations when you are stranded at an airport, unable to make the start of a tour or cruise or you have to cut your trip short because of an illness, death or unfortunate tragedy like a house fire. Rather than lose your money for last-minute airline connections, you can be reimbursed for your expenses once you file a claim.

Handling Medical Emergencies on Your Trip
LIFEcard Health Services Helps Members Plan for the Unexpected

Traveling – domestic or international -- can be an exciting journey. But, there can be unforeseen circumstances that develop. One of the more serious situations is succumbing to an injury or illness. An unfamiliar location and a different healthcare system can exacerbate the situation without having the proper resources to assist you in obtaining the necessary medical care. Be sure to check whether your health insurance covers you abroad and if so bring both your insurance policy identity card as proof of such insurance and claim form.

In cases of an accident and to help facilitate with identification, international travelers should complete the information page on the inside of their passport before leaving on their trip. International travelers are also advised to have their affairs at home in order. If, for example, you leave a current will, insurance documents and power of attorney with a family member or friend, you will feel more secure about traveling and will be prepared for any emergency. Remember, plan for the unexpected. One of the best ways to have your living will and healthcare information accessible 24/7 is with LIFEcard Health – a service that gives members a “safe place” to protect their will and their healthcare information.
